The central theme of my work is the urban environment and the place of the individual within its confines. The walls of the city are ever-changing surfaces on which official and illicit messages are projected and erased. These surfaces are never static but are constantly in flux, contested zones of communication upon which scrawled affirmations of existence are born and buried at irregular intervals. Specters of past activity bleed through a layer of fresh paint while the invisible protagonists wage a war of daubed words outside office hours and away from sight.
Redacted began in 2007, focusing on graffiti that has been crudely painted over. My interest is not in the graffiti itself but the tension played out on the walls of the city.It is a potentially endless cycle of creation and negation between two quixotic agencies seeking to frustrate each others activities.
